Deacons are appointed to serve the church under the direction of the elders.
The New Testament word for deacon means servant. Simply put, deacons serve. 1 Timothy 3:10 states, “These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons....”
Deacons must be qualified to serve (1 Tim. 3:8-12).
Deacons are both ministers of mercy to help the body meet physical needs and servants of the church to assist the elders.
